Nina had decided the best thing to do was to show up. March her ass right up to that door and knock.

But here she sat in the taxi with the meter running.

“Ma’am.” The driver looked at her through the rearview.

Nina couldn’t move. If she went through with this, if she walked up to that door and did knock, what would Bella think of her? I lead a double life, Nina thought. One that she didn’t want Bella involved with. It was too late for that now, though. First, she needed to get her sister out of any danger.

A strange sensation came over Nina. It was a churning acid of fear in the pit of her stomach, mixed with the feeling of being watched.

“Ma’am? Staying or going?” The driver looked impatient now. She wasn’t used to that kind of attitude directed toward her. But she understood it.

“I’m going. I need a minute. You know how rough family tensions can be.”

His expression lightened. “Yes, ma’am. I do.”

Her fingertips tingled. A rap at the passenger-side window made Nina and the driver jump. He cursed. It was in another language Nina didn’t understand, but she knew it was a curse.

Bella stood there, right outside the cab. Nina was sure of that, but she was afraid to turn her head even the slightest. Nina had never been so scared in her life. The sensation warmed her face.

“Can you wait a few minutes, in case this is a disaster?” she asked the driver.

He looked like he felt sorry for her but was about to say no.

“Forget it.” I’ll call an Uber if I need it. She handed him a couple of twenties. He should have waited. He’d have gotten a much bigger tip.

“Receipt?”

She shook her head and put her hand on the door and opened it. As many times as she’d imagined this moment, practiced what she might say, Nina found herself speechless at the sight of her other half. Her twin.

Red hair and all, she was stunning.

“I expected you yesterday.” Bella looked up and down the street. “You should really come inside.”

For the first time since they were seventeen, Nina was face-to-face with her sister. Bella gave her a hint of a smile and turned for the door. Nina followed. No words were spoken as they entered her little house.

The black-and-white-themed decor was so like her own, Nina had to chuckle. “It probably won’t surprise you that my place looks very much like this.”

“Never got over all the color in the house either?”

Nina could close her eyes and remember it all. “Please tell me it’s all still the same.”

“Dad hasn’t changed a thing.” She held up one hand. “Other than adding to it. And he built the jungle pool Mom always wanted.”

“Of course he did.”

“She never recovered, you know.”

She did know. But Nina knew Bella needed to have her say now.

A muscle worked in Bella’s jaw. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy you’re alive. But you put us through hell for years without knowing.” She wasn’t tearing up.
